The battle between Free Fire and PUBG has been going on for years, but the mobile titans are pushing hard as PUBG is suing Free Fire!
The Battle Royal genre is not new and PUBG wasn’t the one to introduce it, however they did make it popular and took it to a whole new level. It was one of the first Battle Royal game to become a major hit. And as other game development companies saw the growing popularity of the genre and they obviously wanted to jump on the bandwagon.
PUBG creators have successfully cashed in from their lawsuits from time to time. They have had sued Fortnite previously as well. But this time Krafton, PUBG’s parent company, is suing Free Fire over copyright infringement. In their lawsuit they have targeted the developers of the game and the distributors, Apple and Google.
The company alleges that Fire Free infringes on PUBG’s copyright. Specifically, in the in-game structure, in-game items, equipment, and locations. Essentially everything about the game that replicates the Battle Royale style of PUBG. The company also leverages their PUBG-Free Fire lawsuit against Google and Apple too. They are suing them because they are providing Free Fire on their respective app stores and have failed to remove it even after Krafton’s earlier complaints.
The lawsuit is broad and going after both Free Fire and Free Fire Max. Although there are resemblances between the two games, it is debatable how much of this is down to the same genre. The Battle Royale format is quite old and PUBG cannot claim to have developed it but still let’s wait and see if this lawsuit comes to any fruition.
